Tips for the office dweller

I've only been in the industry for 4 years now. It's not a very long time, but I think I've learnt a couple of things. Here's some tips for the office dweller...

Teamwork
Your team mates are very important. Get a good desk close to them. Preferably somewhere facing the rest of the team. You get isolated when sitting with your back to people. Also, working your ass off at 100% productivity will result in good work, but you'll get out of touch with your team. Make some time to relax and chat.

Distractions
Identify your distractions - e-mail, internet banking, messenger, doodling, RSS or surfing the net. Then set time aside to concentrate on work and avoid these things.

Other people
It's good to help people in need, but when they become a constant distraction, use the red/yellow/green card system. Get a plastic sleeve and stick it to the top of your monitor where everyone can see it. Then in this sleeve slide a green, yellow or red card.  Green means "go", ask me any questions. Yellow means "beware", I'm a little busy but still available. Red means "don't even think about it". It works.

Working hours
Work only 'till the end of the day. When you start working overtime it's easy to think "I can browse the net for a bit now. If I'm not finished then I can always work late."

Liquids
Coffee makes you tired (it pushes up the heart rate and then drops you very soon). Tea gives less heartburn and has less caffeine. Water is even better.

RSS
And finally - reading RSS every day keeps you in touch with the rest of the world and the latest technologies (even if you still work with VB6).

That's it! Did I miss any good ones?
