In Tun Tavern, Philadelphia, PA the United States Marine Corps was born and the world has never been the same.
Today a great many Marines will be celebrating that birth at the Marine Corps Ball. Other Marines will be too busy listening to the popping of bullets racing past them as they do their duty, but almost all will find a moment to remember the proud history of the instituation that they are part of.
I think few people realize the profound courage it takes knowingly step into harms way. It goes against your sense of self preservation-your primal instinct to protect yourself from harm. Yet, each and everyday tens of thousand of men and women take that step. They grab their weapon, they check their ammo, they make peace with themselves and, they do their job to the best of their ability.
To all the men, women, and families of those individuals who have the courage to put their life on the line so that others don't have to, I salute you. You will always have my gratitude and respect.
