Sharepoint: What is it really? How can one best define it?

Critics of Sharepoint and often potential customer are confused by what Sharepoint really is. And MS marketing haven't found a perfect 3/4 Word definition as yet. Perhaps something like Office-CMS-Portal-Server would come near to it.

I usually describe it as a "Microsoft Mega CMS/Portal/Intranet" depending on who I am talking to. Then I add "It does (take care of ) X for you out of the box". X being file/archive documents/mail, project management, content management, bpm, workflow, publishing, (personal) intranet(s), business intelligence, search, forms, wikis, blogs, server side Excel, versioning, auditing.

How would you best describe it?

Should Sharepoint become more relational

Supposing a helpdesk where each Issue has several tasks attached with a specific cost. There is no easy (fast) way to do it right now, besides some custom coding. Would it help if Sharepoint was more relational?

Sharepoint to become a Web DB?

Sharepoint is becoming more and more a frontend to a backend. Connectivity to MS Access is a given. Now, I'am asking myself if Sharepoint will become a frontend just like Access is to the Jet engine. If only Sharepoint had inbuilt referential integrity!! Give it some ACID !!

Sharepoint CRM

My employer has recently create a CRM entirely build on Sharepoint - MOSS 2007.

Here is the translated page for the Sharepoint CRM features.

Free Sharepoint templates

I put online a mini Sharepoint 2007 site templates (sorry no fancy graphics as yet) . It's a reception/concierge application-template. It's free to download. It works on Sharepoint 2007 MOSS and WSS.

MOSS 2007 collaboration OOB scenario wanted

What it means is I'd like to make every list item "collaborationable":

For each item in a List I'd like to be able to automatically(without hard wiring it all up by hand in Sharepoint):

  • create a Wiki page
  • create a Discussion/forum post
  • create a blog post
  • create an issue/to do item/task
  • upload/associate an email to it
  • log an IM/voice chat against it(OK, I'm pushing it)

If one could then wire up all these things to the single list item in a pretty dashboard that really would be knowledge management with Sharepoint MOSS 2007.
