I just got in from tonight's local .net user
group, Tech
Valley .Net,
where Shawn Gwin did a nice job of presenting a high level
introduction to
using the .Net 2.0 Compact Framework. I've never taken the time myself
to look
at developing with the compact framework, but thanks to Shawn I feel
like I
could at least get up and running pretty quickly if need be. Shawn
outlined a
brief history of developing with the compact framework, using and
switching
between emulators, and strategies for synchronizing data. He coded up a
small
demo app for the purpose of the presentation that involved a fictional
bicycle
delivery service that recorded delivery info and then synch'd up at the
end of
the day. Shawn discussed some of the pros and cons between using SQL
Merge
Replication and Remote Data Access (RDA), and demonstrated some sample
RDA code
within the bicycle app.
If you are a .Net developer living in or around
the Albany,
NY area, you should really consider giving the meetings a try. They are
held on
the second Tuesday of every month and besides for interesting topics
like using
the .Net Compact Framework, they usually involve some pizza, door
prizes, local
job posting information, and a fun relaxed atmosphere. See you at the
next
meeting!
