PGH Events
Events in the Pittsburgh, PA area from various UGs and MS itself.
Doh! The latest MSDN Flash has our meeting date incorrect. The real meeting date is April 28, 6:00 pm, not April 4.
The Tool of the Month ("Use One, Don't Be One") is the SQL Server Web Admin, presented by Brad West from Spang & Co. We know better than to empower just anyone with Enterprise Manager ("Enterprise Damager" as our network admin lovingly calls it), but some users can be trusted to access their databases. The SQL Web Admin is a decent compromise, allowing a great deal of management in a web-based tool. The Web Admin can be installed on any computer that runs IIS, or it can use the Cassini server for machines like XP Home that don't have IIS.
Eric Kepes will present on SQL Server 2005 Express. We all have some of those Access databases floating around out there, doing things we'd rather not think about. Bloated and underpowerd, but somehow essential. SSE may cure these ills. With its built in management and reporting tools, as well as a 'real' database engine, this version may be an Access project killer. We can all hope so, anyway. Join us as Eric demonstrates some of the features that will make our lives a little better.
Register (please) by e-mailing info@badnug.org.
I was fortunate to go to college with Dennis, and he's just recently moved back to the Pittsburgh area. Dennis is a great and intelligent guy, and this looks like an interesting topic.
Tuesday, February 08, 2005 (EST) - Visual Inheritance in ASP.NET...This is no Illusion
speaker: Dennis Butler from Chalk Creek Software
location: Pittsburgh Technology Council from 5:30-8:00pm
Join Dennis Butler from Chalk Creek Software for a presentation focused on identifying object-oriented methods of using inheritance.
Object oriented programming techniques, most notably the ability to inherit from and reuse objects within your programming code, are some of the most powerful and effective ways to develop useful and extensible applications. All programmers can appreciate the differences between a well-designed and organized application, compared to a sloppy, inefficient one. However, for all of the benefits of inheritance, there is a tremendous gap between traditional data-based object inheritance and visual inheritance, especially as it relates to web development. The object oriented structure of .NET allows us to extend custom versions of Microsoft visual web components such as the Datagrid, which is useful in many situations. However, where .NET visual web inheritance falls short is in the establishment of an inheritance hierarchy on larger sets of web objects, such as an entire web page. This presentation by Dennis Butler from Chalk Creek Software http://www.chalkcreek.com will focus on identifying object-oriented methods of using inheritance for sets of visual elements, such as an entire Page object, to simplify the presentation of complicated business logic across a web application. Utilizing the techniques shown in this presentation will allow for a very modular and extensible visual structure across your web applications, that can be then reused for a variety of purposes. Attendees should be comfortable with ASP.NET, object oriented programming, and general web development concepts.

I'm pleased to make the first public announcement of BADNUG, the Butler (PA) Dot Net User Group. Although .NET focused, our events will not be solely developer focused. Our meetings will be held in the Butler/Cranberry/North Hills area.
At times, we will be coordinating with the PGH.NET group to provide bigger functions (stay tuned for more announcements on that).
Full details are still being finalized, and we plan to have our first meeting in late Jan 2005. In the meantime, visit badnug.org, and register. We'll send info as it is finalized.

I got a nice surprise from iTec today in Pittsburgh. After a good presentation about Small Business Server, Microsoft gave out free “Not for resale” versions of One Note 2003. Non-expiring. Sweet!
There are still iTec shows travelling around the country, and some group you're a part of probably has free passes. Here's the schedule: http://www.goitec.com/live/15/forexhib//wheresitec. The meetings were OK, but the free OneNote really made it worthwhile.
This is going to be a great event! If you're close by, definately make time for this one. We're very fortunate to have both ComponentOne and the progressive grocery store chain Giant Eagle based here in Pittsburgh, and doubly so they will share their knowledghe for free.

Tonight's event will includes two separate presentations. The first is Building a 3-Tier Web Application with a WinForms Client presented by ComponentOne. The second is Building & Deploying Wireless Applications by Giant Eagle.
John Juback, Technology Evangelist for ComponentOne, will demonstrate how to implement an ASP.NET application with a WinForms counterpart. The focus of the presentation is a shared data library created with ComponentOne DataObjects for .NET. Data libraries are reusable assemblies that encapsulate all aspects of a data schema, including partitioning into logical datasets, composite tables, business rules, calculated fields, constraints, and custom methods. This presentation will illustrate how a single data library assembly serves WinForms and WebForms clients in either 2-tier (client-server) or 3-tier (Web service) modes. Data library deployment is handled through configuration files; no modifications or special case coding are needed.
Brian Kalmar, Technical Consultant & .Net Evangelist for Giant Eagle Inc., will be our guest for this month's .NET User Group meeting. He will bring in a few of the handheld devices used by Giant Eagle in their stores, complete with barcode scanners, WinCE.Net and 802.11-b radios. Brian will demonstrate how to create and deploy an application to the device using Visual Studio.Net in C#. If time permits, he will also discuss how to deploy applications and DLL's wirelessly to the devices. The presentation will wrap up with an overview of some of the changes that are being made in the next release of the Compact Framework CF2.0 and VS.Net 2005.
Thursday, July 29, 2004 (EST) - Summer Slam III
speaker: Don Marinelli, Co-Director of CMU's Entertainment Technology Center
location: Sports Rock Cafe-Strip District from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
This year's summer social for Pittsburgh User Groups will have a theme on the convergence of Entertainment and Technology.
The Summer Slam III: Pittsburgh User Groups Unite
You may be a devout Java programmer, a developer committed to Microsoft's .NET framework or an XMLer caught in the middle. You could be a DBA working in Oracle or an IT professional committed to SQL Server. Either way, we will set aside our differences this one day in July as we combine the summer socials for many of Pittsburgh's user groups including PittJUG, Pgh.NET, PittMark, PghOUG and PSSUG. All technology enthusiasts are invited to this unique night of networking and fun. Attendees will learn about the benefits and challenges of each technology through informal conversations with your peers.
The theme of this year's event is the Convergence of Entertainment and Technology. Don Marinelli, Co-Director of CMU's Entertainment Technology Center, will be our guest to deliver the keynote address. This year's event will have some new features including an interactive gaming area and some great raffle prizes. Appetizers will be provided and a cash bar will be available. One thing is guaranteed...there will be lively conversation and cool refreshments.
There's an MSDN event in Green Tree that ends at 4:00 on this day also, so it's going to be a race to get across town in time for the .NET 101!
