Silverlight in the Enterprise

Deploying Silverlight in the Enterprise

As more and more Silverlight sites become available, enterprise administrators are starting to ask for guidance on how Silverlight should be deployed in a corporate environment. Obviously, at one level it's as straightforward as executing the installer, but there are typically a whole ton of questions that need answering:

  • What files and registry keys does Silverlight install?
  • Will Silverlight break any existing applications?
  • What are the command-line switches to configure installation?
  • How do I deploy Silverlight through SMS or System Center?
  • How is Silverlight serviced and updated?
  • How do you configure Silverlight settings via Group Policy?

Yahoo Hack Day Anniversary

By chance I put on my Yahoo Hack Day t-shirt last night and it reads - Yahoo Hack Day '06 Sept. 29 - 30.
It was an amazing event that I had hoped would become an annual gathering of imaginative ingenuity and fun.

Yahoo is still the number one destination on our Web, but now Jerry Yang is running the show and he's 75 days into the next 100...

Looking ahead, we want to dramatically improve our performance and capture the major growth opportunities we see ahead for the Internet. I intend to spend the next 100 days or so focused on mapping out a strategic plan for the long-term success, working with our teams to put the right organization and the right people in place, and making any necessary changes.

We are well on our way with a top to bottom review of our business in order to effectively address the company's challenges and capitalize on our many great opportunities.

Jerry has help on the Yahoo Reorg: Sue Decker’s Memo To Sales, but another Yahoo Hack Day could have increased their momentum by engaging the developer community and generating a huge positive buzz around our World Wide Web.

Enabling Dreams

Inspiration

You gotta watch this video, as I was watching the last lecture of Randy Pausch at Carnegie Mellon University I looked up from my PC and the CBS Evening News was talking to Randy.

Luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity....How to achieve your Dreams... or How to lead your life, if you lead your life right the karma will take care of itself and the dreams will come to you.

I recently lost a friend of twenty years to cancer, but wish John Moriarty could have shared a last lecture in Dreamtime for me to link to now and every time I think of him.

TED in New York

TED - Technology, Entertainment and Design, an amazing and engaging conference about ideas worth spreading that's held every year in Monterrey California came to Manhattan yesterday and I was privileged to be invited.

Notes from the TED Salon  On a sweltering ninety degree late September day we discussed Hot Science: Radical Ideas to Combat the Climate Crisis.

Our day began with a superb lunch at Condé Nast Headquarters in Times Square with guest speaker Mark Gainsborough, VP Supply Strategy, Shell Petroleum on Sustainable Energy and the Consumer Challenge.

The main program in the evening was at the Asia Society and Museum on the Upper East side, a beautiful venue

Videos of the evenings presentations should be up on the TED blog shortly, till then view the wealth of ideas there.

What If Intel

What if software were like this?

What if Intel started to share ideas and prototype software products as they were being developed? Intel is now offering advanced research items in the form of pre-production tools, add-ons, and prototypes online for you to try out. You're invited to test drive these tools, and then collaborate with your peers and offer feedback on one of the many forums.

Overclockers at Intel

Today at the Intel Developer Forum I attended a two hour session on overclocking extreme systems....five years ago nobody would have ever believed it.

Yea, there was a legalistic disclaimer - yer on yer own - and this is of course not officialy endorsed by Intel - if you fry your cpu they will gladly sell you a new one.

The new Extreme Memory Profiles - XMO - now enables you to easily overclock the memory and Super Talent Technology just announce their new Project X DDR3 memory, the first to support XMO.

The Extreme Edition Cor2Duo's are unlocked and a new line of motherboards will soon be available with software and a new bios interface that will make it so easy for anyone to get the thrill of the overclocker - but you will need to source your own liquid nitrogen....

Intel Demonstrates Industry's First 32nm Chip and Next-Generation Nehalem Microprocessor Architecture

Intel's Developer Forum is celebrating it's tenth year here in San Francisco with the announcement of the worlds first 32 nano meter microprocessor.

It's still two years away from general availability, but just sixty years since the invention of transistor by Bell Labs in New Jersey. Now I'm on my way to meet Gordon Moore.

Microsoft Ruling May Bode Ill for Other Companies

On Sunday I was in Europe and now I'm in San Francisco, but my body clock is still back in County Kerry Eire.

The photo in todays NYTimes of the Judge with the white powdered wig is priceless....

I'm here for the Intel Developer Forum as are hundreds of other Europeans.

I would note that a lot has changed since this case started in 1998. The world has changed, the industry has changed, and our company has changed - Bradford L. Smith, general counsel for Microsoft

Nice wig, he must be a Real Player.....
