Silverlight 1.0 RC1

Silverlight 1.0 RC1 is Here!

Since the beta we released at MIX, we've fixed approximately 2000 bugs and work items and we're now feature complete with the final JavaScript-based API. This version of the runtime is vastly more stable than the beta release: our stress test runs show improvements of two or three orders of magnitude in many cases, and the product demonstrates the polish one might expect from a near-final release.

There is also a alpha refresh of Silverlight 1.1 for you to download and play with.

Software Plus Services

Yesterday at Microsoft's Financial Analyst Meeting Ray Ozzie gave us his Software Architect viewpoint, every one of our software offerings is either a socket for a new attached service that connects to that software offering, or an upgrade or up-sell opportunity to extend a product's value proposition up to the Web and, potentially, through mobile devices.

We're building a platform to support our own apps and solutions, and to support our partners' applications and solutions, and to support enterprise solutions and enterprise infrastructure. We are the only company in the industry that has the breadth of reach from consumer to enterprises to understand and deliver and to take full advantage of the services opportunity in all of these markets.

I believe we're the only company with the platform DNA that's necessarily to viably deliver this highly leveragable platform approach to services. And we're certainly one of the few companies that has the financial capacity to capitalize on this sea change, this services transformation.

Now it's up to independent ISV's to build on the Microsoft platform the services that will transform the way we live, work and play.

Microsoft OSS

Microsoft OSS Web Site

Today Microsoft launched its new open source web site. Starting in 2001, they began thinking long and hard about open source from the perspective of it as a dev model, a business model, a licensing model, and a philosophical approach to software.

Working with all the developer communities is a very good idea.

Atom Feed

That’s All, Then

What’s Next? · Now we’ll find out who’s interested. The Atom feed format is a success; RSS isn’t going away, but a steadily-increasing proportion of the world’s new feeds are Atom 1.0.

Syndication Wars 2007: Atom's Time is Nigh, With Google on its Side

A prediction  that Google's influence will see Atom become the dominant feed publishing standard within the next few years.

The Atom feed format is an upgrade to RSS and as more and more publishers migrate to it we will arrive at a tipping point. There is so much that needs to be done along the lines of Tagging, attention and identity; Atom will help move us along.

Windows Genuine Advantage Wins

Sting! The biggest software counterfeiting bust in history

Over one thousand people around the world discovered through WGA that their software wasn't legitimate, so they sent Microsoft the disks and brought down the biggest software counterfeiting operation in history.

Just a day after the CEO of Acer was whining that Windows Vista wasn't producing a windfall for his struggling company the counterfeiters have shown that there is indeed a huge worldwide demand for the latest Microsoft OS.

The Chinese criminal syndicate involved had their production facility and assets seized by the Chinese authorities, no get-out-of-jail cards were offered for sale. In a week were Swedish authorities closed ThePiratesBay and Russian prosecutors are indicting AllofMP3 we are seeing a sea-change in the perception that software is free.

Dotnet Developer Songs

When I last spoke to Scott Guthrie he told me he was going to FOO Camp, where the most interesting and imaginative people in the software industry meet. I now have this image of Scott Guthrie and Scott Hanselman sitting round the camp fire into the wee hours of the night singing dotnet developer songs....

Scott announced last night that he's going to work for Scott to possibly collaborate on many more dotnet developer songs. Scott Hanselman is one of the best software technology speakers and the most underrated blogger in the business. Scott Guthrie has to be the most authoritative blogger around, as his Team creates new and exciting technologies he is able to articulate all the complexities in very simple terms.

Two Scott's with the respect and admiration of the dotnet developer community will greatly help to inspire and create many cool new applications and solutions.

Google Phone

Google Pushes for Rules to Aid Wireless Plans

Google wants to be the disruptive force in telecommunications, delivering ads to every man, woman and child on the planet. Competition benefits all of us, but can Google play in the same league as Verizon and AT&T?

Verizon and AT&T are behemoths that have swallowed technology and telecommunications companies whole. Their PR statements yesterday accusing Google of trying to influence the United States government are dumbfounding even for our age of hypocrisy.

Google has lots of money in the bank, but the banks have a lot of money in Verizon and AT&T.

50 Billion Dollars

Microsoft’s Annual Revenue Surpasses $50 Billion

This fiscal year marked the general availability of Microsoft’s flagship products, Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office system. Revenue growth was primarily driven by solid customer acceptance of these products, as well as increasing sales of SQL Server, Windows Server, Visual Studio, and yes, the Xbox 360.

50 billion dollars and they haven't even started selling advertising, or offered Paul a contextual blog ad.

Windows Home Server RTM

Ship it!

Woo-hoo!  We did it. Today we are announcing that Windows Home Server has been released to manufacturing

I was lucky to be chosen as a beta tester of the Windows Home Server and it was easy to see that this was going to be big!

I just got back from Denver attending the Microsoft Partner conference and catching-up with my old friend Bernie. We went to Tulane University back in the day when there was just one computer for ten thousand students. Now Bernie has three kids, a wife and a dog all with PC's living the Hi-Def digital lifestyle. So I said Bernie you need Windows Home Server and little did I know that as I said it they were popping corks in Redmond.

Microsoft SLP Services

Microsoft Announces SLP Services to Streamline Software Development and Sales

Introducing innovative solutions that help ensure a return on your software development investments. By managing the entire software lifecycle—from idea to revenue—we enable you to more effectively protect, package, license, sell, and control the use of your software.

At the Expo Hall reception last night I had a beer in one hand and a take-out carton of Chinese noddles in the other. So I found an counter top to rest my beer while I put the chop sticks to work transferring the noddles from the carton to my mouth. Then some literature on the counter caught my eye, Microsoft SLP Services: Building a bridge between software and software business

Wow, I thought as the noddles rolled down, guidance for ISV's on how to successfully make and sell software.

In a few months time we will find SLP Services included in our MSDN Universal subscriptions along with the Visual Studio Team Suite.

Check-out Softwarepotential.com for all the SLP Services benefits.

Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Tool 2.0

Windows Vista Hardware Assessment 2.0 Public Beta Now Available for Download!

I had a nice chat with Baldwin Ng yesterday at the Windows Vista booth in the Denver convention center. He's extremely enthusiatic about The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment Solution Accelerator, it's a quick and easy Tool for determining if the computers on your network are ready for Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office System.

Digipede is Innovation Partner of the Year

This year I skipped the Awards ceremony at the Microsoft Partner conference, with an Expo Hall beer opportunity and the big ISV bash I just didn't have the time.

People keep asking me how is the conference for you and my reply is usually it's not as fun as TechEd  because of all the people I know there.

Then I bump into the Windows CE Yoda, Paul Yao and later in the evening met John Powers at the ISV Party. I've known John for about three years, his software is called the Digipede Network and it's grid computing on the dotnet platform.

So I asked John if Digipede had a booth and he said weren't you at the Awards ceremony tonight?  Digipede won ISV/Software Solutions, Innovation Partner of the Year

A great company with a simple solution that enables improvements in application performance by utilizing all the computing power on your network.

I'm so happy that they are finally being recognized and rewarded, this is an outstanding achievement.  Microsoft Innovation Partner of the Year, innovation is what gets me out of bed each morning...
