It's a New Day

Ready for a New Day blog

The webcast from today's NASDAQ event is now up on the A New Day for Business site along with tons of resources.

Steve Ballmer Kicks Off Most Significant Product Launch in Microsoft’s History

Press people arrived at the NASDAQ exchange early on this spring like morning in New York to hear Steve Ballmer talk about a New Day for Business as Microsoft Launched Windows Vista, 2007 Office System and Exchange Server 2007 on what turns out to be MSFT’s twentieth year anniversary as a public company.

Increased productivity through collaboration and real time access to information sums up the message Steve delivered to a skeptical technological challenged audience of journalists and photographers from all over the globe.

I asked Steve if anyone had calculated the man-hours necessary to produce Windows Vista aside from the five million beta testers, he smiled and said that contributions to Vista come from many different product Teams at Microsoft so no man-hour, man-month, man-year figure is available.

Friends later told me that I was on the giant LCD screen atop the NASDAQ exchange in Times Square, larger then life as I asked that question. I should have had my URL embroidered on my shirt....

What's a Newspaper?

What would techies do with a newspaper? First, they'd make it all digital

I write in hypertext, newspapers still typeset.

My locial paper has been absorbed by Gannett, they are a big fish in a shrinking pond.

Gannett is a massive media conglomerate without any meaningful web presence.

In 1900 NYC had over a hundred newspapers, today there is two and a half.  Radio blossomed in the early twentieth century and many newspapers folded because the advertisers went to Radio to get the attention of consumers.

TV in turn disrupted Radio and the remaining newspapers, people rather see and hear the news rather then just read it.

Now this interactive internet thing is gaining more and more of the advertising dollars and someday the demise of newspapers will be found on a blog post not on a headline.

Adieu to Google Answers

The people who participated in Google Answers -- more than 800 of them over the years -- are a passionate group committed to helping people find the information they need, and we applaud them for sharing their incredible knowledge with everyone who wrote in.

Google Answers Shuts Down

This was Google’s foray into the land of user generated content and the answer they got back is it’s not for us. Most of the enthusiasts have gravitated over to the world of Wiki’s where they can pursue whatever agenda is near and dear to their hearts.

We still have Yahoo! Answers, and the new and shiny QnA Live where I participated as a beta tester.

PowerTogether

PowerTogether is a new MSDN site where developers can learn about developing applications for Windows Vista and the new Office System.

In the new world of work, information is power, and the 2007 Microsoft Office system allows users to turn that information into results. It frees IT departments to concentrate on strategic tasks, since it’s now easy for users to create their own portal sites to share information. It also simplifies deployment, management, and system administration. And it offers enhanced interoperability, with support for Web services and interoperability standards, including XML and Simple Object Access Protocol.

Just follow these steps and they'll send you a free, fully-licensed copy of Microsoft Office Professional 2007

Windows Vista is a breakthrough computing experience that will change the way people use their PCs. It works the way they want it to work. It adapts to users, rather than the other way around. And it dramatically improves access to information, wherever that information is stored.

Watch three videos and receave a FREE license copy of Windows Vista Business.

The site is suffering some bandwidth incapacities, but stick with it if you want to see the videos and get the software.

While your waiting why not try the TechNet Virtual Lab: 2007 Microsoft Office System, and you might win an XBOX 360!

Web 2.0 Highway

Is Web 2.0 the wrong path?

Marshal Tito???

I still have some money with Marshal Tito's photo on them, but declaring Tim O’Reilly some sort of heavy handed dictator is ludicrous.

Web 2.0 is a term coined by Dale Dougherty who was inspired by Amazon dot com.

Everybody’s been to Amazon dot com and we've read the recommendations of other shoppers that make this experience different and better then any other on-line store.

Amazon’s system had intelligence before there was a Google, remembering every thing I bought and knowing what I’m thinking of buying.

The market place we know as the internet isn’t going away, it’s getting bigger, faster and cheaper every day.

The Soul of Microsoft

The Soul Of A New Microsoft

Edgy thinkers like J Allard are looking far beyond Windows for the next big thing....

New soul.... LOL...the author of this Business week cover story never read the history of Word vs.WordPerfict.

Our American Football rah-rah mentality is an integral part of the soul of Microsoft. Bill Gates’s family were avid fans of Washington State football when he was growing up and Steve Ballmer was the equipment manger of Harvard’s Football team when he was an undergraduate there.

I played football in High School and Collage so I understand about motivation and teamwork.

Microsoft is about Partners, the Zune is made by Toshiba a Microsoft Partner and XBOX games are written by Partners.

Partners have made Microsoft what it is today and Partners will continue to generate revenue for and thanks too Microsoft.

AI Riches

A Smarter Computer to Pick Stocks

Ray Kurzweil is now a hedge fund manager and thinks the future of stock-picking will be done by machines.

Artificial intelligence is becoming so deeply integrated into our economic ecostructure that some day computers will exceed human intelligence

I met Ray back in October and recorded a video of his talk on the Acceleration of Technology

FatCat has Michael W. Brown as an invester, he used to work at Microsoft and is now Chairman of Nasdaq. Bill Gates say's he's the best person I know at predicting the future of artificial intelligence.

Has anyone had any luck with those lotto machines that generate numbers for you?

Whenever I read about historical patterns 1929 comes to mind.

The Google Bubble

A $500 Milestone for Google Believers

It’s obvious why I wouldn’t make a good stock broker having thought the Google IPO was overpriced. When I heard on the news yesterday that Google shares closed at over $500 the first thing that came to mind was that we would see this on Techmeme in the morning.

Clearly this is not about business or technology this is a religion.

The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine

I use Google search everyday and they have bestowed a great amount of authority to my blog for which I am grateful, but I’m not going to pay $500 for a single share of stock.

Don’t bet against the internet

Two years ago many predicted that Google would rule the desktop, the enterprise and the WWW, we’re still waiting, waiting, waiting…..

Data Platform Vision

Yachoo!

Yahoo has caught a cold and everybody has an idea for a cure.

Yahoo Memo: The 'Peanut Butter Manifesto'  - So where are Jerry and David?  I'll bet Terry is in Italy with all the other stars.

176 Newspapers to Form a Partnership With Yahoo

Partnering with the dead tree press doesn’t inspire me, why not aggregate a few hundred blogs into Yahoo news?

How about a follow-up to Yahoo Hack Day Was that just a PR stunt or was anything learned? David Filo sat right in front of me during the Hack Day competition as can be seen on my video, but he was unapproachable. I talked to Jerry Yang at the first Web 2.0 conference, but he too seemed very set in his ways for a young guy.

I use My.Yahoo everyday, but it hasn’t been updated in a few years with new widgets aggregating content that I need now!

Yahoo as of this morning is still the number one site on the internet as they have been since this WWW began.

I love the way Yahoo discovers all the videos I post on my blog, they are the only one doing that right now. Yahoo needs to innovate more as a leader should and not go out acquiring some bubblegum.com company just because they can.

NJ Code Campers

We had a great day at NJ Code Camp III, they came from North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Vermont, New York and all over New Jersey. Who wants to be raking leaves or watching football when you can be talking about code, SharePoint, SQL, ASP.Net, Community Server and Web 2.0.

SiteMaps protocol

Microsoft, Google, Yahoo! Unite to Support Sitemaps

Yahoo, Google and Microsoft join forces (really !!) behind Sitemaps

Microsoft, Google and Yahoo come together to support of the SiteMaps protocol

The Sitemap Protocol allows you to inform search engines about URLs on your websites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap that uses the Sitemap Protocol is an XML file that lists URLs for a site. The protocol was written to be highly scalable so it can accommodate sites of any size. It also enables webmasters to include additional information about each URL (when it was last updated; how often it changes; how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site.

Whenever Microsoft, Google and Yahoo cooperate we all benefit.
