Windows Live Gadget SDK Updates (6/26/2006)

We have just updated the Windows Live Gadget SDK for June. For the most part, this is just a minor release. Changes in this update includes the following:

  • Added Developer's Checklist that enumerates items that well-written Gadgets should comply with.
  • Updated guidance on adding icons for Gadgets to reflect changes to the Live.com site. Images for Gadget icons should be in .GIF format instead of .PNG format.
  • All images in samples have been updated to use .GIF format.
  • Added more information in the Avoiding Memory Leaks section of the Developer's Guide.
  • Added a new section on how to Disable Caching in IE in the Developer's Guide.

Please let us know if you have any feedback! thanks, James Lau

You could have a Gadget used by millions of people around the world with a link back to your blog or company site!

Rory Does Channel9

Yeaps! Rory is now on Channel9

I've decided, humble as I am, to try and create the greatest series of screencasts in the entire universe on the subject of Windows Mobile development. I'll probably fail, but that's no big deal. It's just a goal.

Rory Does Windows Mobile Development - An Introduction

Creating a Web Browser Using the .NET CF 2.0

A Simple Data Driven Windows Mobile App Using SQL Server Mobile

Data Synching: Part One

WinFS Update

From the WinFS Team blog: Update to the Update.

Is WinFS dead?
Yes and No. Yes, we are not going to ship WinFS as a separate, monolithic software component. But the answer is also No - the vision remains alive and we are moving the technology forward. A lot of the technology really was database stuff – and we’re putting that into SQL and ADO. But some of the technology, especially the end user value points, are not ready, and we’re going to continue to work on that in incubation. Some or all of these technologies may be used by other Microsoft products going forward. - Quentin Clark

Quentin should have explained better in his update post last Friday, the Microsoft community was left wondering and the bozo bloggers had a field day. How can someone who blogs on a Mac take it sooooo personally when a Microsoft Technology is delayed or discontinued?

Even Mini-Microsoft jumped into the fray.

Let's just hope ADO.Net 3.0 is everything we hope it will be.

Intel Inside

I lived in Ireland throughout the ‘90’s during the greatest economic boom in Irish history; I would like to claim some credit for that growth, but it was the efforts of the IDA enticing high-tech companies to establish a presence there that was the engine of change. Upon entering the country at Dublin airport you would pass a big map of Ireland and in the center was the logo:

Intel Opens Third High-Volume 65nm Manufacturing Facilityuser posted image

Intel Extends Leadership in Advanced Chip Manufacturing with Europe’s First 65nm Chip Factory in High-Volume Production

The US$2 billion factory has begun high-volume production using 65nm process technology produced on the industry’s largest wafer size (300mm), which provides the Intel fab with the potential to generate the world’s highest microprocessor output at the lowest cost. Along with Intel’s Fab 12 in Arizona and D1D fab in Oregon, the new facility (called Fab 24-2) is the most technologically advanced, high-volume semiconductor manufacturing plant in the world building multi-core microprocessors.

Listen to RTE News as Intel's President and chief executive Paul Otellini says Ireland is still an attractive location for Intel.

The Sensor Age

All this time I thought we were living in the Information Age, imputing data into computers so they could process it and send it to our friends, RFID is now enabling machines to impute their own data.

Yesterday at SIA Conference in NYC Kevin Aston from ThingMagic gave a Keynote on RFID, Technology & Innovation Leadership. The key word is leadership, the machines are taking that.

Just last week I was running around TechEd with an RFID chip embedded in my name tag, now I can see how this technology will be used everywhere. It’s going to make our lives easier or should I say more productive and at the same time make us obsolete.

Microsoft Robotics
