Windows Installer XML

The Scobleizer has posted a new video on Channel9, does he know that we have a Windows Installer User Group in NYC?

Wix team: The most used piece of software at Microsoft (and it's open source!)

What piece of software is used in Windows, Office, MySQL, and many other places? The Windows Installer XML (WiX) toolset.

But even better, did you know it's open source? And, did you know that it is developed by an all-volunteer team.

It's developed after hours, come along and meet the team and attend one of their developer meetings.

Rob Mensching's blog talks more about it too.

Digital Advertising Lab

Microsoft Digital Advertising Lab Public Launch

I just came back from our local recycling dump after dropping off thousands of Tech and Developer magazines, most of them I never read, but that's OK because the subscription is FREE. They all have the same ads, you've all seen them and each publisher counts me as a valuable subscriber and charges Microsoft, Sun, IBM and Intel a premium price to reach an influential technology professional like ME!

I've had to fight with our local newspaper because we didn't want to receive the Sunday edition as we already get the Sunday NYTimes. They sent it to us anyway for FREE, but I have to recycle the paper and it's heavy. Yet they still count me as a loyal customer and they are charging their advertisers according.

adCenterBlog

For too long websites have been making exaggerated claims about page views without ever admitting most of them were by 14 to 16 year old males. So for all the PR slimes who claim to be in Marketing but never mention the science of demographics here's a tool that may teach your clients something:

 Demographics Prediction tool.

Digital advertising is going to be huge, it's big already....but it's just beginning. Soon we will be seeing contextual ads everywhere. You may have noticed my pioneering effort at placing contextual ads in each blog post I publish. My blog gets syndicated by more websites then I can count, but they never ask me permission or acknowledge what they do....they just take my feed and slap ads by Gooooooooooooogle on the side.

Most bloggers get mad when their feed is republished, but I used to work in Radio and see this as a way of boosting my siginal - my voice ....and when people click on the links at the end of this post my ROI increases exponentially.

Microsoft's Digital Advertising Lab is a tool that will help us learn more about our audience as we tailer our message accordingly in this brave new world of internet communications.

Windows Live Shopping

Windows Live Shopping Site now LIVE

Just in time for the busy weekend shoppers

What is it? It is the beta launch of Microsoft’s Web 2.0 shopping experience, featuring one of the world’s largest product catalogs, user-created content and an easier-to-use interface built on 100% AJAX technology. It uses a unified shopping engine to search or browse almost 40 million products from 7,000 stores ranging from many of the country’s leading retailers to eBay. Results are displayed in an order that is not affected by advertising; merchants cannot pay to have their items show up closer to the top. Users will be able to drag-and-drop items to a shopping list and share lists with friends; see user reviews of products and sellers; and read and create public shopping guides on any subject.

Windows Live Shopping is about comparison shopping with imput from the shopping community, who is in the shopping community? I think we all are, so check-it out and offer you feedback and who knows you might find a great deal on something....

Heavy contention for disk resources can dramatically impact SQL Server performance, and SQL Server Agent jobs can be some of the biggest offenders. In this presentation, Steve Wright, MCSD, MCDBA from the sqlSentry Support Team will cover:

  • How and why jobs and job collisions can cause disk contention,

    Ask Steve Berkowitz

The opportunity to work in the online space for a company like Microsoft, with its vision, capabilities and global reach, is truly exciting.

This is an industry in its early years, with so much opportunity and so much yet to be figured out. Microsoft has a team of some of the world’s greatest technologists and business leaders who are committed to pushing the boundaries of what is currently thought to be possible.

I look forward to working for Microsoft and with the many talented people there who have the ability to be a force for change to continue to shape this still nascent industry.

Chief of Ask Jeeves to Lead Microsoft's Internet Unit

I think it's a great win for Microsoft. Steve knows what it's like to be an underdog in the search space and fight your way back onto the radar screen. Danny Sullivan

This is a huge win for MSN...paidContent

What he did well at Ask.com is exactly what he needs to do at Microsoft -- come from behind and take on the big guys at Google and Yahoo. The big difference -- he'll have a MUCH bigger budget and talent pool at his disposal!  Charlene Li

    Wow... John Battelle

I never liked Ask, so don't ask me....why does this old post come-up when I search on Ask: Paul Mooney : MSNBC NOT ?
