Windows Server 2003 SP1

Windows Server 2003 SP1 RTM

After one of the longest alpha/beta programs I have ever been in at Microsoft, Win2K3 SP1 finally shipped at 5:20 PST. This is, like Windows XP SP2, going to be a vital upgrade with all of the great security work that has been done. Beta people can get it now. Actually, it's already up for everyone on Microsoft's site. The technical information page is here and a Top Ten feature list is here.

This post is brought to you by FREE Wi-Fi access in NYC!

NY-SQLServer UG

The NY Metro SQL Server User Group will meet tonight at 6:00

Jim Guerrero of Idera will examine best practices and techniques for monitoring performance and access to SQL Server including the following issues;

On the performance side we'll look at how you can use scripts, native tools and SQL diagnostic manager to use tried and true Ratios to identify problems. We'll also examine the use of Wait-Based events to pinpoint bottlenecks, as well as, how to determine who and what is hogging resources and slowing down your server, either in real-time or at some point in the past.

In regards to controlling access to SQL Server, Sarbanes-Oxley is on everybody’s mind. We'll see how SQL Server's native auditing utilities and Idera's new SQLsecure Auditor product will help you get a handle on who is accessing your system and what they are up to. We’ll show you how to define and document your controls. Plus, prove you are adhering to internal or external controls, and when your not, who the guilty parties are.

I'm on my way into the City now, so it's going to be a long day, hope to see you tonight!

Yahoo! 360

Hey, I'm blogging over on Yahoo! 360 and I like it! It's a fun site, a way to hook-up with your friends and family.

I’ve been a Yahoo! For over TEN years and as I write that I can hardly believe it’s been that long! Thanks Send a message to this friend Steve Rubel for hooking me up!

I use MyYahoo everyday and belong to several Yahoo groups so it’s only natural that I should start-up a blog on . Much like MSN Spaces, Yahoo! 360 is a blogging space that even your Grandmother could use, all you need is a few photos to share and something to say.

As time goes by I have more and more photos to share with three Flickr accounts full I need a new place to tell my digital life story. Anyone out there who would like an invite send me an email and I’ll hook you up!

ISV Buddy Forum

Check out the new ISV Buddy Forum (and others) on the ISV Community Center site!

This forum offers an opportunity for broader communications among the ISVs in the program, and for stronger collaboration among the program members. This forum will also enable Microsoft employees to reach out to a larger ISV community and get a broader understanding of the community needs. With increasingly more contributions to this forum we hope to make it an asset for ISVs, both small and large.

If your company has partnered with Microsoft in some way, please share examples of your experiences and any advice so that other ISVs and Microsoft employees can learn from your experiences.

BlogDay

I’m blogging a year today! When people ask me about blogs I always tell them you have to start one to truly understand what they are all about.

Blogs have many more dimensions then a Webpage, most of my readers have never been to my URL as they read my posts via RSS on a Feedreader. Each individual post has a life of its own, once I publish a post it can go almost anywhere!

The more I write using hypertext the more I see its incredible power, how can a dead tree writer compete with a digital blogger? Blogging is an adventure where you encounter many great people and learn from them as you share your knowledge of the world.

SXSW Interactive

People interacting is what SXSW Interactive was all about and I had a great time meeting people whom I have known or know from their presence on the internet. Jeffery Zeldman gave the opening Keynote and it was a brilliant un-talk that served as a wonderful introduction as I got to meet and talk with him over the following days.

Malcolm Gladwell gave the second day Keynote promoting his new book Blink, but he didn’t as he gave a great performance, then disappeared in the blink of an eye. Ana Marie Cox doesn’t have a blog anymore but she’s famous and continues to say all those words the boys like to hear. Al Franken got a ton of laughs and applause in a big room full of Texans, God bless America!

Alex Steffen nearly had to give the final days Keynote by himself but was noticeable relieved when Bruce Sterling made a dramatic entrance and they talked of a future somewhere between the unthinkable and the unimaginable.

Although this was not a conference about computers, I couldn’t help but notice all the Apple Powerbooks everywhere, the Scobileizer’s Tablet PC and my laptop were the exception. The highlight for me accrued at Bruce Sterling’s party, arriving early and quickly recognizing Woz, spending over an hour with him and all his fascinations, of all his accomplishments he is most proud of his children.

affirms that people have learned to interact through machines and not the other way around. It was great to catch-up with the Vloggers, Andrew and Chuck their everywhere these days and most deservedly so.

The Web 2.0 alumni were there to attest that that conference was a milestone and it was nice to see, Jason, Jason, Jason, Mary, Marc, Craig, Jeff, and Tantek. During a panel on the future of the internet I received an email announcing this years Web 2.0 conference and hopefully our circle will continue to grow.

NYCDOTNETDEV Meeting

After the Parade come on over to tonights meeting of NYDOTNETDEV

Create a Content Management System in ASP .NET 2.0 and SQL Server 2005

ASP.NET 2.0 and SQL Server 2005 include several new features that make it easier to create efficient, maintainable Web sites. You'll learn how to use such features as Master Pages and the Membership API to quickly create a site infrastructure, and SQL Server 2005's native XML support to easily save and retrieve rich content objects. Not ready to move to bleeding-edge, unreleased products? I'll show you how to emulate these features in ASP.NET 1.x. You'll walk away with code for a basic content management system you can use as-is, or customize as you wish.

 Speaker: Phil Weber

With over 15 years of software development experience, Phil Weber's client list includes Intel, Kaiser Permanente and Wells Fargo Bank. He has worked with VB since 1993 and .NET since 2001. Phil is a Contributing Editor to Visual Studio Magazine and has spoken at numerous technical conferences in the U.S. and abroad. He currently works as a senior support engineer for Corillian Corporation, an eFinance enabler.

SXSW lives up to promise

SXSW is everything I heard it would be, people I know and people I’m happy to meet. Is there anyone left in San Francisco, Seattle or New York?

Every Keynote is packed full of attentive people and every panel is a sea of eager listeners. It’s fun too, meeting people you know and people who know you is always nice. You read someone’s blog, look up and there they are! Who needs Google, when you can just shout out someone’s name?

Day two is just now beginning after a long night of parties, blogging is a dirty job, but somebody has to do it!

Ace Awards

This years Embedded Systems Conference is bigger and better then last years which was bigger and better then the year before. Systems on a Chip are moving into our lives, I’ve seen the future and its embedded computing systems.

Last night the big winners of the Ace Awards were IBM Research named "Design Team of the Year" for its system design work on the BlueGene/L supercomputer. My old friend Hector Ruiz was executive of the year and his AMD was named large company of the year . Atheros Communications was picked as small company of the year.

Gordon Moore received a Lifetime Achievement Award, Moore's Law accurately predicted that the number of transistors that could be place on a computer chip would double every 18 months. "You can't afford to fall behind if you want to stay ahead in the semiconductor industry,"
