NYC Bloggers Dinner

It didn't happen last night, however it's been moved to tomorrow night (Thursday).  For all of the details check out Tim's blog. http://weblogs.asp.net/tmarman/posts/43941.aspx  If you're coming either put it in the comments or just show up and look for Don.  See you there.

XAML and Visualizations

XAML is going to bring some great new visualization tools to Longhorn.  I vote for a “Map of the Market” tile application for the sidebar.  It would be a breeze to hook up some XAML to a couple of web services and you've got some crunchy goodness.  For a look at what a map of the market is look here -> http://activequote.fidelity.com/rtrnews/market_map.phtml

And by the way, if you don't have access to Longhorn bits you may want to grab notepad and a learn SVG site.  XAML and SVG have some of the same concepts.

The Blogging Process

Here's a nice bit from Dave Pollard on “The Blogging Process”.  Checkout the flow chart below, then go read the article.

Subscriptions

Warning: Sport Bitching ahead (Sport Bitch = no real reason, you're just doing it for the sport).

While playing with SQL Reporting services today, there was the usual bit about subscriptions.  “Just click here for subscriptions to this report” and I asked “Is a RSS feed an option”?  Then all you could here was crickets.  Why don't people (aka product managers) include RSS as a subscription option.  And currently the only one that I know off is Vault.  Kudos to Eric for brining that hidden feature out of the closet.

NYC Blogger's dinner

I'm going to be in NYC next week on a project, anyone up for a NYC blogger's dinner?

SQL Server Reporting Services

I'm doing some training on Microsoft's SQL Server Reporting Services and it looks like it's going to kick Crystal Reports square in the Jimmie's.  How many people have you worked have encountered this scenario:

Project Manager: “Hey, do you have any Crystal experience?”

Me: “Crystal, what's that?”

Project Manager: “You know, the reporting application”

Me: “Um-mm, no.  But if you want I could right you an application that generates XML files from queries, that are then rendered into SVG doc's”

Project Manager: “Damn, Gerety always wants to use SVG, I'll go try Clark.”

It's very nice, integrated into Visual Studio.NET and now I'll be happy to put something like this on my skill set (of course, after I implement a world-wide reporting application).  Check it out.

Blogging and want ads

I've noticed more and more blog entries about open positions.  And it struck me that blogs are a great way to find the people you want.  They usually have the same interests, otherwise they wouldn't be reading your blog.  And it's not spammed out to the big job sites.  I think we'll see more of this.

NOW - No Opportunity Wasted

If you watched the Amazing Race reality series when it was TV, you'll recognize the show host, Phil Keoghan.  He's got a new show called “NOW”.  It's an opportunity to literally give him a list of things you'd like to do before you take the dirt nap.  What would you do?  Go ahead apply, what have you got to lose?  http://media.dsc.discovery.com/fansites/now/now.html
