I'm in New York for
Fleet Week. Lots of fun stuff to do. But I've been pretty busy studying all of those books that I bought before we got underway.
For Haven: I'd love any help you can give me. A list of good books would be a great help.
My ship recently went through what is called Deperm. Which is the process of removing the magnetic signature of a ship so that it wont attract mines quite as much. To do this the crew wraps the ship in thick copper cables which are heavy, slimy, muddy and generally just nasty. Once the ship is wrapped LOTS of current is passed through them. First one way and then the other. Sort of like making a magnet out of a nail and some wire like we did in grade school science class only on a much larger scale.
This sucks not just because of all of the heavy lifting involved, but because it's not a good idea to bring any magnetic devices with you when doing this sort of thing. In other words no laptop for Jim on this trip. The hard drive would have been scrambled by the end of the day. It's amazing how reliant we become on technology. Reading about .Net isn't quite the same as reading about it and then coding it. I actually had to play Solitaire, etc. with real cards. No technology makes Jim a bored guy.
At least my SPOT watch worked. ;-)
I've been out to sea the last couple of weeks. The next few months are going to be spent mostly at sea. The good news is that it's giving me a lot of time to study for more MCP exams. I'm working on 70-306 right now. It'll also saves me some gas money. Whew! $1.66/gallon now!
Being a .Net Hobbyist has some advantages. For one when I get home at night I haven't been coding all day. I'm more likely to dig into code at night and learn more.
I checked in on the ship today. So far so good. It looks like this is going to be a good tour.
Tomorrow night WeProgram.Net is meeting on the Penninsula. This month Steve Metsker is doing Hands on Training with nUnit, so bring your laptop if you can. Time: 6:30pm, Place ESI in Newport News. More info...
Don't forget Thursdays meeting of HRSSUG at ESI in VA Beach. Geoff Snowman is doing his Yukon for Developers presentation AND I hear he's bringing the pizza.
