Anyone want to have a geek dinner Thursday evening before the HRSSUG meeting? I’m thinking The Hilltop Brewery. I’ve wanted to sample their brews for a while now.
I checked in on the ship today. So far so good. It looks like this is going to be a good tour.
Tomorrow night WeProgram.Net is meeting on the Penninsula. This month Steve Metsker is doing Hands on Training with nUnit, so bring your laptop if you can. Time: 6:30pm, Place ESI in Newport News. More info...
Don't forget Thursdays meeting of HRSSUG at ESI in VA Beach. Geoff Snowman is doing his Yukon for Developers presentation AND I hear he's bringing the pizza.

In preparation for the HOT session with WeProgram.Net next month there's a good article on Unit testing in .NET on the new TheServerSide.NET site.
From Grant about last nights meeting: Jim Meeker failed to win a book for the 3rd meeting in a row; the streak is clearly over!
Maybe next time!
Happy New Year from the Hampton Roads SQL Server User Group
We have an exciting year planned for us; especially with the much anticipated launch of the next version of SQL Server, code named Yukon. We already have quite a few speakers lined up for this year. We're starting the year off with a Microsoft speaker, Kelley DuBois, addressing the important issue of security. February will feature a return appearance by Microsoft's Geoff Snowman, to discuss Yukon from a Developer's point of view. March will feature a follow-on presentation by Brian Moran, of SQL Server Magazine, on Yukon from a DBA's perspective. Susan will squeeze in a presentation in April, covering new technologies gleaned from the PDC and PASS conferences. May will be our INETA sponsored meeting, with renowned guest speaker and author, Ken Spencer. And we still have another version of Windows Server 2003 with 25 CALs to raffle off! Please be sure to pass on our schedule to any that might be interested. Notifications of our schedules will only be sent to you if you sign up on the site (http://www.hrssug.org) to receive this newsletter or event notifications.
Don't miss out on the next HRSSUG meeting:

A colleague of mine just returned from PASS and she brought back sample chapters from a few books that I would like to read. Heads up to the WeProgram.Net folks these would be great prizes.
Test-Driven Development in .NET
eXtreme Programming Adventures in C# (ok I'm A VB.net GUY but I can convert, or maybe Darrell would like it)
Object Thinking
;-)
Frank Grimberg gave a great presentation on tips and trick in ASP.NET. A lot of it was client side Javascript to server side C# tricks. Tre Cool! His code examples are available for download on the HRSSUG website.
For Grant's information, I did not win any prizes last night. ;-) Deb Cheek won a copy of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with 25 CAL's.
INETA speaker, Brian Noyes will do a presentation on the application blocks concentrating mainly on the data access block. Tonight 6:30 pm at the ODU Peninsula campus.
Chuck Hawkins, one of the co-authors of The SQL Server 2000 Stored Procedure Handbook, gave a very informative talk on Using SMTP Mail in SQL.
AND contrary to popular belief, I didn't win anything. ;-)
We also heard about another user group in the area, The Information Technology Professional Association of Hampton Roads. Their last meeting was about WiFi setup and security. I wish I had known about it earlier. It sounds like it was a really interesting presentation.

Last night at the WeProgram.Net meeting I won a book. .NET
and COM: The Complete Interoperability Guide, by Adam Nathan. It looks
to be a really useful tome (I do mean tome, it's HUGE) as there are a lot
of COM Interop questions on the various MCP exams. I'll add it to the list
of other hugely useful books that are currently in my reading stack.
I need to go on
vacation so I can read. ;-)
My User Group is switching over to the Community Starter Kit for our web site. It's up and running finally and I'm about to start trying to skin it. I found a resource that explains it a little better (i.e. more in depth) than the documentation that comes with the kit.
WOW! Yesterday was a
whirlwind of .NET related events here in Hampton Roads. I missed the
morning sessions (Some of us do had to work, at least part of the day ;-). But I
was able to attend the afternoon events. Microsoft Developer Community Champion
Geoff Snowman (Say that three times fast), gave an informative presentation on
Smart Client apps and No Touch deployment. After the break (We got
free popcorn from the movie theater the event was held in), Geoff talked
about the upcoming Visual Studio add-in for writing MS Office applications.
Really cool stuff.
Later in
the evening Geoff talked to our SQL Server
User Group about Reporting Services (Code Named Rosetta). This looked REALLY
exciting and very easy to use. Especially if you've ever tried to use Crystal
Reports with VS.NET. It had great integration with Visual Studio. I'm
looking forward to the release (Around the end of the year for SQL Server 2000).
You can try to get in on Beta testing by filling out the forms here.
It looks like
we're building quite a community of Hampton Roads .NET bloggers. Mark
DiGiovanni and Paul Laudeman have
joined the fray. Subscribed.
Via Darrell
Norton: Welcome to the blogging community Grant Killian. I've
subscribed.
Our August meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, August 19th, at 6:30 PM. It will be at the VA Beach location of Electronic Systems Inc. (Next to Mt. Trashmore) Our speaker will be .NET Evangelist Geoff Snowman, from Microsoft's DC office. Geoff is thinking of presenting on the upcoming SQL Server Report Services. Additionally we will be giving away some special prizes so be sure to attend this month.
Southern VA .NET Users Group is having a meeting tonight. 6:30 at the Old Dominion University Peninsula Campus in Hampton, VA (Directions). Tonight's Topic is the nUnit Testing Framework.
While at the Tidewater .NET User Group last night
I heard about a group that recently formed on the Peninsula. Much to my surprise
the Southern Virginia .NET User
Group has fellow DotNetJunkies blogger Darrell Norton as a
member. I've already missed their July meeting but I'll be there next month
though.
In case you haven't
seen it yet, Donny
Mack has put yup an RSS feed for ALL of
the weblogs at DotNetJunkies. Woo Hoo!
