I'm a Google lover and I think that all my (few) readers now know this so... can I miss a post about the launch of the new Google Desktop Searching Tool? No...
I've not well tested the tool at the moment (just a little try) but the first thing I've see is the missing support for Firefox, but I'm sure it's only a temporary lack.
Google is for me (but not only for me I think) a synonymous of "search" so, after the great Google Deskbar (one of my useful tool of every day work) this is the next big step for a desktop search domination... and when Longhorn and WinFS will come??
Today I've received a question from a friend (I've sent to him yesterday a new Gmail account) and I want to report my response here, because I think that most of you could have the same necessity and don't know how to solve it.
The question was "How can I move all my mailbox on the mail client on my pc into my new Gmail account?"
I had the same problem when I've opened my Gmail account... I want to transfer all my Inbox from my mail client (Thunderbird) to Gmail and to solve this task I've search the net and I've found a great tool written by Mark Lyon that performs exacrtly what I need: Gmail Loader.
Thunderbird uses the standard mBox format to store the email messages (the messages are stored on a unique file on your hard drive). Gmail Loader is able to read this file format and forwarding all your emails to the Gmail account, without deleting your files from the original source. With this tool, it's really simple and quick to move all your Inbox to Gmail... try by yourself!

Today, the GMail Loader is a graphical, cross-platform, Python based utility that supports two mBox formats (Netscape, Mozilla, Thunderbird, Most Other Clients), MailDir (Qmail, others), MMDF (Mutt), MH (NMH), and Babyl (Emacs RMAIL). The only missing thing is the support for Outlook format (PST) (I understand that this could be a big lack for lots of you, but I'm not an Outlook user so this tool was exactly what I want to have).
I hope that, if someone of you maybe a day have the same problem here reported, now can understand what type of action to take.
Do you like skinning? Do you want to skin Gmail on your Firefox Browser?
HERE you can find all the instructions to do this... it's really a simple task:
- Install the URLid Mozilla/Firefox extension.
- Download this CSS file.
- Locate your profile folder and the
chrome folder within that. - Copy the downloaded CSS file to the
chrome folder and rename it to userContent.css (if you already have such a file, you will have to merge the two). - Restart Firefox.
- Visit Gmail.
The result? This:

A new version of Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT) is released from Microsoft.
If you don't know this tool, it's used to migrate user files and settings during large deployments of Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP. USMT captures desktop, network, and application settings as well as a user's files, and then migrates them to a new Windows installation in order to improve and simplify the migration process. More details about it on the Microsoft site.
A useful download to have...
I was searching the net for some sniffing library and I've found this curious tool that I've totally ignored: MSN Sniffer.
MSN sniffer is a network utility (not free) to capture MSN chat on network. It records MSN conversations automatically and all intercepted messages can be saved as HTML files for later processing and analyzing. It will record any conversation from any PC on the network and you can record all without being detected.
It's interesting for some Network Monitoring functions, but I'm asking if actions like these are totally legal. If you are at work, at the university or every other possible places and you're using MSN, if someone is logging al your conversations, are you happy? What about the privacy? I'm sceptic about these type of actions...
