Microsoft will compete with Google?

I've just read this notice:

"Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is set to challenge the dominance of Google with his own high-powered search engine, which has been in secret development for more than a year. A Microsoft spokesman said: "Microsoft believes that the search engine experience can be dramatically improved and we are investing significant financial and human resources in a new type of search engine that will be a major improvement on existing offerings."

Why this? Why always this absurd competition? Why not a collabouration to improve an existent search engine?

Google is now the best search engine and I think that MS will not reach the Google power (just a little check on MSN Search... terrible!!). I think that MS could obtain many advantages with a collabouration with Google, not with a competition.
